The MPG number on a new car's window sticker is measured under specific, standardized test conditions, not on the road you actually drive. The gap between the sticker number and real-world fuel economy isn't a manufacturer trick, it's baked into how the number was measured in the first place.
The test conditions don't match real driving
Official fuel economy tests run on a dynamometer (essentially a treadmill for a car) following a fixed speed and acceleration profile, at moderate temperatures, without real-world variables like hills, headwinds, aggressive acceleration, or running the air conditioning. Real driving includes all of those, which is why real-world MPG is usually lower than the sticker figure, sometimes meaningfully so.
Why highway and city numbers differ so much
City driving involves frequent stopping and accelerating, the least fuel-efficient thing an engine does, while highway driving holds a more constant speed, which is why highway MPG is almost always higher. A car's actual fuel economy on any given trip depends heavily on which kind of driving that trip actually is, not just the car itself.
Why the unit conversion is a separate issue entirely
Converting a known MPG figure to L/100km or km/L is a purely mathematical exercise, and it's an inverse relationship rather than a simple multiplier, since MPG measures distance per fuel while L/100km measures fuel per distance. That conversion is exact. What isn't exact is the starting MPG number itself, since that already reflects a specific set of test conditions rather than your actual driving.
