Why Counting Syllables From Spelling Alone Is Harder Than It Looks
Why English spelling doesn't map cleanly to pronunciation, and how every syllable counter that isn't backed by a pronunciation dictionary handles that gap.

Counting syllables sounds like it should be simple arithmetic: count the vowel sounds. The problem is that English spelling and English pronunciation frequently disagree, sometimes wildly, which means counting from spelling alone is fundamentally an estimate, not a precise calculation.
The gap between spelling and sound
"Though" and "tough" end in the same four letters and rhyme with nothing alike. "Fire" is one syllable for some speakers and two for others, depending on dialect. Silent letters, unusual vowel combinations, and words borrowed from other languages with their own pronunciation rules all break the simple "count the vowels" approach in different, unpredictable ways.
The standard workaround, and its limits
The common estimation method counts groups of consecutive vowels as one syllable each, then applies a handful of well-known corrections (a silent trailing "e" doesn't count, certain "le" endings do). This gets the overwhelming majority of everyday English words right, and it's the same core method essentially every syllable counter uses that isn't backed by an actual pronunciation dictionary. It will still occasionally miss a genuinely irregular word, that's an inherent limit of estimating from spelling, not a bug in any particular implementation.
When the estimate is good enough, and when it isn't
For a readability estimate or a casual haiku draft, the estimate is more than good enough, small misses on individual unusual words don't meaningfully change an overall readability score. For something that demands genuinely exact syllable counts on every word, formal poetry with strict meter, for instance, a human ear checking the output is still worth doing.
